Suds backing up our laundry standpipe.
    Hello,

We just moved into an apartment, and we are on the ground floor of a four level building. The other day we heard a noise from our laundry room and were surprised to discover that laundy suds -- thankfully not actual water -- were backing up out of our standpipe in the space between the washer drain hose and the standpipe. It was kind of a slowly growing wall of foam...

Now, seeing as how we weren't doing any laundry at all that day, we can only assume that the suds were backing up our standpipe from someone else (probably above) doing laundry.

Is there anything we can do to prevent that from happening again? The building manager went and knocked on a few doors to find out who the culprit was (and advised them to use less soap), but I'd rather rest easy knowing it can't back up like that again...

Can I completely seal (watertight) our laundry drain hose into the standpipe? Would doing so create the potential for any new issues?

    Thanks!

Yes and no! Yes you can install a compression fitting on the stand pipe to seal off the hose and no it wouldn't stop the suds from backing up the stand pipe, into your hose and back into your washer. If any liquid came up with the suds you might have a partial blockage in the drain, in which case it should be snaked out. Regards, Tom

Maytag Washer having suds backing up [ 54 Answers ]

Can anyone let me know what to do? I have a new maytag (toploader) washing machine that has been working fine for 5 months. Last week, I noticed suds backing up from the drain area (where the pipe empties water and suds into the wall). There are only suds spewing out, no water. I called Maytag and...

Laundry standpipe overflow [ 10 Answers ]

The standpipe that our washing machine drains into recently started overflowing. It's only a small amount at a time, creating a tiny puddle that runs in front of the machine. It seems to happen during the rinse cycle. There's no noticeable odor or sudsing. Any idea what could be causing this...

Suds overflow from washer drain [ 5 Answers ]

This may actually be a washing machine problem rather than a pure plumbing problem but I'll float it here anyway. We recently replaced our aging washer and dryer. We are now experiencing overflow of soap suds from the washer starting near the end of the spin cycle. This was not a problem with the...

New Washer - Old Standpipe Backing Up [ 5 Answers ]

We bought a new washer 10/2006 and it immediately flooded our garage floor. The standpipe was leaking at the base anyway and I thought there was a clog so I decided to cut the old one off... augered 20 feet into the main line (which revealed nothing), repiped it and then poured virgin sulfuric...

Suds in the toilet [ 2 Answers ]

Hi, I have been reading several of your post and a lot of them are helpful but I want to get specific on my trouble. My master bath is about 15 feet from the washing machine. Our machine overflowed about a month ago and we thought it was going out (10 yrs old) so we bought a new one. Now, when...
