Most browsers come with a setting that lets you search "safely." It will help the next person here help you do that if you tell us what kind of computer you have which browser--PC, internet explorer?

Second, you can buy software that will block adult sites--Parental Filters.

For example, here are some reviews of some.
Internet Filter Software Review 2009 - TopTenREVIEWS

I honestly know nothing about them, except a lot of people use them.

Lastly, put the computer in an area where you are likely to walk by frequently. This is what I did with my two sons and I have not ever used a filter. They know I'm coming by and the computer screen is facing towards me, so they don't look at anything that's really going to shock me. If I see the screen change suddenly when I walk into the room, I walk in more often!

This approach has served me well. Whatever you do, don't give your son a laptop with wireless and let him disappear into his room for 7 hours a night. Just don't even go there. It's a huge mistake.

If he wants to use the computer, let it be in the kitchen or the living room, and make a point of hanging out there with him and looking at things he's looking at. If he wants to show you something funny, look, laugh and enjoy it with him. Make it a communal thing. Make the time. And of course have something else you are doing, reading, bills, a movie, mending, peeling potatoes, etc.

Edit: Or using another computer, of course. :)

Look into any or all of these: Cyber Patrol, CYBERsitter, FamilyConnect, ICRA, Net Nanny, SafeSurf, and SurfWatch.
