HELP!!

The flat above has some new tenants, they have a shower at 5.30am - it wakes me up every week day. Walking around like a zombie!

What sound proofing options are available?

I live in the Victorian converted property. The conversation was done in 1970.
I am on the first floor.
There was an ensuite in my bedroom, which was converted into a dressing room, but the flat upstairs still has it as an ensuite and when they have a shower I hear the water running - constant pressure noise. Also as the pipes warm up a bit of ticking.
It sounds like the water is running up through the wall in my dressing room.
This is also an outside wall.

Any tips would be v.v.v gratefully received.

Hello Carolyn : What you hear is friction . It is noise of water as it is passing through the pipes. Combined with non-Low-Flow shower head ( or tub spout ), you will hear water rushing through the pipes.

If you have hollow ceilings ( wood frame construction), you can install a good, 3/4" pipe insulation on both h/c pipes. Also, you can install ceiling insulation ( like R-30 ) that will cut down on the noise. But here, you would have to cut open your ceiling so you can get to the entire length of the pipe.

The ticking is product of expending pipes. This is usually less of a problem in summer but more audible in winter. Not too much to do about it. You have to hope insulation will take care of it.

If your neighbor installs Low Flow shower head, the demand would be lot lower therefore lowering the friction noise. But here, you would have to do some lobbying.. be you can talk to them about this.
