Nervous about going to the gym.
Ok so I have decided yes I am going to join a gym. At first me, my mom, and my friend were all going to join. Now it turns out that my friend cannot afford it, and my mom wants to go to a different gym than the one I chose. So now I am kind of nervous of going. I am extremely embarrassed when it comes to my body and exercise. I'm also worried about looking like an idiot if I don't know how to work the machines. I know lots of people have to go through what I'm going through but I just am worried. Is this normal for someone who is just starting to go to a gym (first time I have ever joined)?

No, it's not strange at all. We are nervous about new things, but I'll be willing to bet after the first few times, you'll love it, and will "fit" right in.

I am recovering from surgery, and am going to start back working out myself. I am quite reluctant to do so, but must do it anyway.

I am going to go in the mornings before I go to work, so there won't be too many people there at 5:00 am. Maybe you should do that if you can, at the beginning, go during the slow times, early or late when you can explore, and get used to the machines.

Good luck to you. The more you exercise, the more you WANT to go. I makes you feel great!

I think it's a great idea to go at off peak times. That way you won't be worried about lots of people around you, although it's good to remember that most people are focused on what they are doing and not on what you are doing .

A lot of gyms offer a free induction and you should think about taking advantage of this as you can then be sure that you are using the equipment safely and correctly, otherwise you could do yourself an injury or simply be not doing the exercise to it's best effect.

Also I am sure that there are bound to be people, just like you who are nervous, so don't be scared. Just focus on what you are trying to achieve, be it weightloss, improved fitness, health or wellbeing and remember that you are paying for this, so make sure you are enjoying it.

I have also made some great friends through attending the gym, so who knows you may find your gym buddy waiting for you.

Good Luck and I am sure you will be fine.

I have the same problem. I bring my iPod to distract me. And when that doesn't work, well, I'm the one watching other people. Lol usually, everyone else is so focused on their own workout, they don't even seem to notice anyone around them.

My son just joined a gym and the instructor told him since he is not all buff,to visit during non peak hours.

Ask the instructors there for advice about the machines, they are there to help and they really don't want to see you hurt yourself.

New experiences can always cause a few butterflies but getting out of our comfort zone is a great way to grow as a person.

    Good for you!
