I don't know why but my computer tells me that there is a problem with my audio device.
I don't have speakers just headphones, shouldn't the audio still work anyway? And how would I solve this problem?

Hello bahamut,

If you're getting an error message concerning your audio device, the problem most likely has nothing to do with your speakers/headphones, but with your soundcard. You may need to reinstall or roll back your soundcard drivers. If you decide to try reinstalling the drivers, check your soundcard brand and find the brand's page online; they should have all the drivers available there for free download.

How would I find out what sound card I have without tearing my computer apart? I have no information on what's in the computer

Any changes that either happened or that you perhaps made to your computer around the time that the problem started; particularly any Software or Hardware that you installed or setup.

What OS?

Check device mgr to see if any yellow marks present, if so, which ones?

What model computer?

Have you check to make sure nothing is muted?
-double click on the speaker next to the clock
Make sure nothing is muted and you have wave and volume slider bar up

Seahwk83, if he gets an error message concerning his "audio device," it's probably not muted, right? More likely a driver or hardware problem, I would think.

Bahamut, like Seahwk says, you can check your Device Manager to see if there are any yellow "!" next to your sound devices. You can also find your soundcard brand on the Device Manager. To get to Device Manager, click on "Start," then right-click on "My Computer," then select "Properties," then choose the "Hardware" tab, and the first button on the top should say "Device Manager." Once you're in the Device Manager, look for "Video, audio, and game devices," and click the plus sign beside it. Your audio devices should show there, and if there are any recognised problems, you'll see the yellow mark; the brand name of your audio devices should be there, too. All this is based on Windows XP, so if you have some other OS you may find navigation a bit different.

I'm sure Seahwk knows more about this kind of stuff than I do, but either way I'll keep an eye on this thread and see how it's going.

Ok lol chcked the driver manager and there is no yellow ! So I have no idea what's going on lol

Im running xp and it says my Legacy Audio drivers is that any help at all?

Oh and the sound has not worked on this computer since I got it but it worked before that :)

Have you checked above info about the Master volume and make sure that wave and master volume are not muted?

Make sure you have headphones in the audio out jack and not mic in or line in jacks

Tells me that there is a problem with my audio device.

What is exact message and when do you get this message?

What type of sounds/music are you trying to use?

What OS?

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly.

This is the error message I get, but I usually use itunes same deal there

Mu OS is windows XP service pack 2 I have also looked for drivers and there is heaps of different drivers and I have know idea which one to get :)

Double click on the speaker next to the time
-click on options then properties

Next to Mixer Device use the dropdown box to see what other devices are listed there and change to another one other than the one that is there now and click OK.

Now try to play again to see if sound comes back

If not, try again and if there are other devices listed in that dropdown box, try another one and do same thing.

Hopefully it is here where the problem is, just the wrong mixer device is chosen.
