Sounds like you need a new spout(if diverter is located on spout).

Or a new mixing valve if diverter is located in the escutcheon plate.

So where is the diverter, on the spout or on the wall?

Both can be rebuilt or repaired if you are still out there

Makes sense to repair if built into valve body, but if its on the spout, best to just replace the complete spout.
ballengerb1, are you sure all diverter spouts are rebuildable. Im not being a smart a$$, just have never repaired the ones I deal with(of course I guess I've never really looked that close at them, as we have tons of them in stock and never had to think about fixing them over replacing them.). Please let me know if all spouts are fixable(mostly interested in standerd Moen tub spout diverters. Thanks. Lee.

Well, ill be a son of a monkeys uncle,, I just grabbed a moen tub spout diverter and by god, the handle did screw off, and it came apart just like you said. I guess I always just assumed they were form fitted on, never knew you could unthread the handle. Wow, thanks for the info. I know it may be a little weird how excited I am to learn this,, but sometimes it's the simples things that make life fun. Thanks again. Lee.

My old man taught me that if someone can put something together he could take it apart and fix it. He was right most all the time.
