Only use full-synthetic diesel HDEO. If you do this, and change the oil, fuel, and air filters every 5,000 miles, you should have a good experience. This link, and several other diesel articles in the Sticky, may help bring you up to speed on PSDs:

The notorious problems with the 6.0psd's are leaking egr coolers and oil coolers. Late 05 and on did receive some updates to the egr cooler but also are still problematic. One of the easiest fixes to prevent the egr cooler leak is to get a freeze plug and press it into the egr cooler opening. What happens is that the cooler eventually starts pitting or cracking on the inside and allows coolant to get into the intake and we all knows what happens after that... The other option is to get a sneaky pipe and rerout the up pipe on the passengers side. This will give you better mileage and performance by opening up the exhaust more. It also will help keep the turbo alive longer as for the recirculated exhaust (full of carbon and particulates) won't be going through the intake and turbo. The egr leaked on my 06 even though I dropped the coolant every 2 years and changed oil every 4000 miles. Ford replaces it under warranty and it wasn't even 6 months and my truck was puking coolant again because of the egr. It has now been 31k since I blocked off the egr with NO ill effects. I would recommend that if you want to keep the egr or want to go to a better oil cooler check out Ford Diesel Store

Did you know you can call the Federal Dept of Transportation (NHTSA) at 1-866-327-4236 and file a report. I was just informed my case has been "escalated" to a higher power for review AND the more complaints and reports, the more likely there will be a recall issued.
