I have a Hamptom Bay ceiling fan that was purchased from Home Depot by the builder of my house. The fan stopped working at low and medium speeds. We were told to try a fan switch (pull-chain). We installed fan switch and the fan still only ran on High. We took the fan down and took it into Home Depot. They wanted to look at it before they gave me an entire new replacement. They found the capacitor melted, so they had a guy in the electrical dept. replace the capacitor. We took the fan home and installed it, and now it doesn't work at all. We took the lower part of the fan off where the capacitor is, and found the orange wire that goes from the capacitor to the reverse switch box is broken off at the box. It looks like the wires are part of the switch and you need to replace the entire switch and wire assembly. It has 2 rows of 3 wires so from what I have found on the net it is called a DPDT switch.
Is there a way to repair the connection for the orange wire to the switch box? Should I get a new reverse switch? Where can I find a reverse switch, I have looked everywhere and can not find anyone that sells it?
This has been very frustrating and annoying.

The frustrating part is that they are supposed to give you a new fan from the get-go, not try to repair it, especially when they do not know what they are doing. I could have told you from the beginning the problem was the capacitor and not the pullchain switch.

The wire can be soldered back on to the reverse switch, but this guy messed up your fan, and it was supposed to be under warranty, so I'd insist on a new one.

Thanks! I agree and the contracting dept. sent to the ceiling fan dept to pick a new one but the employee in that dept wanted to look at it first. They do not carry this style fan and I really like it, but you know, it's just a ceiling fan.

If you really like the style, it can be repaired easily. The wire can be solder right back on to the reverse switch. Also DPDT switches are very standard and available at any electronics store, but in most cases you would have to solder the wires on as well.
