All civil lawsuits are lawsuits for money damages.

The types of lawsuits are contract; negligence (also called tort); sometimes bankruptcy matters are considered lawsuits although there are no Plaintiff and Defendant and they are not true lawsuits; matrimonial/family actions - divorce, support, custody; private issues, usually neighbor issues, invasion of privacy, that type of thing.

    Is this what you mean?

Yes! Police officers entered my home without a warrant, conducted a search, and did damage to personal property. Upon my arrival at home, they were surprised to see me there and immediately left without saying a word. Estimated damages came up to about 15,000.00$. On top of that, my son's dog ran out while they were leaving and got ran over by a car, instantly killing the dog. What can I do?

Get an Attorney and file a lawsuit against the municipality - the filing deadlines are VERY short when it's an action against a municipality, so don't delay.

Civil as opposed to criminal one answer to your question.

An example of a civil lawsuit for this set of facts would be a suit against them seeking money damages, Other possible civil remedies (in the appropriate case) would be injunctive relief (an order that someone don't do something), a declaratory judgment (such and such is the case), etc.

A criminal case would be an action against the government against one or more named defendants, seeking to put the defendants behind bars or otherwise to penalize them. Concevably (but not likely) the state could charge these officers with a crime.
