Trying to confirm date and maker of old roll top desk
    Hi,

I recently acquired an old roll top desk and I'm trying to confirm the year it was made and by what funiture maker. I have several photos and have attached a couple here. Any information anybody can provide would be much appreciated. Thanks.

That is a lovely piece ! But difficult to identify this way. I assume there are no markings anywhere on the desk or you would have mentioned them. I suggest you have an antique appraisor take a look at it. They can usually tell b y the way the drawers are put together, along with the rarity of the wood now.

    Hi tick,

Thanks for the quick response, I'll track down an appraiser and see if I can get some info that way. I appreciate your help.

    Hi, sobway!

Tick makes a very valid point about how the drawers are put together. Would you be able to post some images of inside and outside corners of the drawers, please? Also, it would be helpful to know on what the drawers are sliding.

    Thanks!

    Hi clough,

I'll take a few photos this evening and post them. The front and back of the drawers are constructed with dovetails and it appears the drawer fronts are mahogany and the rest of the drawer (sides and bottem) are oak. It also appears the drawers slides are oak as well. Thanks for the response, look for the photos later tonight or tomorrow.

    Hi again, sobway!

I have another question for you.

What does the desk smell like on the inside, please?

I have a good reason for asking that question.

We'll look forward to seeing the additional images.

    Thanks!

    Hi clough,

Here are couple photos of the drawer corners. I also found this photo of a number stamped in two places (inside left pedestal and underside of tambour rool). Lastly, I had my wife smell the inside (just lifting the roll) and inside a drawer and she tells me it "smells like old funiture" and that she could not pinpoint a specific smell. Not sure this helps. Thanks again for your help and input.

How does one unlock the drawers? The rolltop lock does not function and the drawers on the left are open. The locking mechanisms are spring loaded hooks that hook over the back of the drawers when they are closed. How do I get the right drawers open?
