We noticed yesterday the sound of running water in our pipes. We have found no leaks in the house, no standing water, no water stains. The meter outside is spinning like crazy and we can find no water entering the house. If we cut the water off at the street, the running sound quits. Open it up and it starts again. We have cut off individual lines into the house- toilets, kitchen faucets etc... to no avail.
What is going on with our plumbing?

Are you on a slab? You say you shut the water off at the street. Did you also shut off the house shut off to check the service? If you've shut off everything i9n the house and the meter still spins the chances are very good that you have a hidden leak under the cement. This is costing you money every minute the meter spins. Before you go to bed shut the meter off at the street. You'll still have enough water in the tank to flush the toilet. Next morning turn it back on and call a plumbing company . Ask then if they have a instrument that will detect a hidden leak. If not then call around until you find a company that has one. Don't let this slide!! Move on it ASAP. Good luck, Tom

Thanks for your answer. You basically confirmed my worst fears. While we are not technically on a slab, we do have a basement and all the water pipes come through a crawl space. As far as I know, there is no shut off valve inside the house. We will be calling plumbers tomorrow morning.

Also see if you can isolate it to the hot water. Turn off just the hot water.

Many times water is run under the cement to reach other areas in the house. My experience says hot is more susceptable.

You have been started on the right track but one more question, do you have a boiler or furnace?

This is a far stretch, but while we are throwing out ideas,, if you have a water softener, check to make sure its not stuck on regenerate. Please let us know what your plumber finds. Lee.
