Are you required to speak with the police?
Hello:
If there's a murder next door, are you required to answer questions? If the police stop your car for expired license plates, are you required to answer questions?

Hello again,
Ok, it's neck and neck. Well it's CLOSE to neck and neck...
I ask the question, because I think MOST of you think you HAVE to talk to the cops if the cops want to talk to YOU.

There was a murder across the street from me in Florida back in the 1970's. The cops didn't come to my door but a nice, handsome private investigator did about it and we started a nice affair that lasted about 6 months. Does that count?

Never have never will. In my neighborhood if you talk to the police you are an outcast from that point on.

Artlady - It's a true story. The guy across the street was killed (shot) by his roommate. I knew the dead guy. The private investigator taught me a lot of stuff plus we'd have fun on stakeouts following around cheating husbands in the middle of the night. The 6 months went by very fast.

I think it depends. If the police were at your door you could say you know nothing about it and slam the door in his face... but you might get in trouble for doing that. If you were pulled over you should just answer the questions.. who wouldn't? You wouldn't just stare at the police and say nothing and you might just say "i don't know why my license plates are expired" or "i don't want to tell you why my license plates expired."the cop might just give you a ticket.. so I don't know. Lol

Hey, this is what I learned from watching Law & Order so often. On the show you don't have to talk to them.
I probably would anyway, I never have anything to hide and I love when people get in trouble.

Oh, how to follow a car on the highway at night. Oh about sitting bored out of my skull waiting for the husband to come out of his gf's apartment, get in his car and go home alone. Oh about going to dinner and sitting literally next to the guy and his girlfriend and listening in on the conversation or going to a bar and sitting next to the lovebirds. Oh stuff like that.
And no, the car was an automatic but had 4 on the floor and got in the "way" a lot. Hard to use the binnoculars from the backseat. Not impossible, but danged near impossible.

Forgot the end of my little story. It seems that I was "entertaining" my scuba instructor one night at my apartment after scuba class and my handsome private detective was spying on ME! Oh, well, he was married anyway.

Last Thanksgiving had a man stabbed on the hall in front of my apartment, I called the police, but still refused to give a statement when they got there.
So no you never have to talk to them short of some state laws, if driving a car you have to provide the drivers license, tell them where you live and in some states give them birth date and /or social.
Same in some states if they stop you on the street
