    Ticket for theft under $5000
    Hi,

I'm from Ontario, Canada, and I am 19 years old. I was recently caught stealing from a department store. I was taken to the back by a security guard and the police were called. When the officer came, he gave me a ticket with a fine and I was then released. This is my first offence. I was not offered any diversion program or told to appear in court (like others asking similar questions); I was just given a 'ticket' (a yellow paper with instructions of payment on the back).

I was told that this would be permanently on my record, just like speeding tickets. I have a few questions:

    1. Is this true, and if not, is there any way I could go about having it erased?
    2. How serious / detrimental is my situation?
    3. Will this appear on any background checks performed by employers?

I'm not sure if being given a ticket counts as being 'charged.' I've been unable to find any clear answers so far, and I appreciate any help. Thank you.

By paying the ticket you plead guilty and this will be on your record. It may or may not show on future background checks depending on the depth of their check, some are superficial. I am no expert on Canadian law but in the USA you have the right to have a bench or jury trial.

Is there any way I can have it expunged or cleared?

Do not pay the fine and go to court.
