My ceiling fan is definitely capable of attaching a light kit, but I don't know its make. I bought a Hampton Bay light kit and opened it up only to find a warning that, to reduce, (reduce is the word used, not avoid) risk of fire and electric , it should only be used with one or two specific Hampton Bay models. It really doesn't appear to be any different in sete up than a similar kit I first purchased, also by Hampton Bay but claiming to be universal. I returned that because I wanted a different colored glass bowl.

Anyhow, I wonder how concerned I should be about using this kit on my fan of unknown make. I am not sure a kit (if I could but find one labeled universal with the correct color glass) which is 'universal' would be any different, but perhaps there is something big I am missing here.

Any input would be greatly appreciated . Thanks.

Many light kits are universal as long as they slip onto the old fan. The Hampton you bought may have a plug in harness, not sure but I would not use it. Go back and look for another universal kit. When you removed the small round pan shaped cap from the bottom of your fan what did you find?

ballengerb1 -thanks for your reply. When I removed the cap, I found many many colored wires, including a white and a blue wire. The reason I bought this one kit is that it claims, on the box "fits most fans". But the instructions inside are much more restrictive. Can't seem to find a more "universal" kit. The Hunter version is universal for Hunter fans, only.

It's fine, if it can be mounted to your fan it will work fine. Just connect it to the white and blue wires marked "for light".
