Laminate flooring is not a good choice if there is going to be a leak or gets wet.. The laminate flooring will raise at the joins and be unsightly. I would suggest ceramic or vinyl.

Agree, and since when does the contractor get the idea he can specify what flooring goes dow. You tell him exactly what you wish and he does it. Laminates can swell and/or delaminate from water getting into the seams, bad idea.

I have seen this put in at wet locations, and I have to agree that it is not the best solution.

Laminate floating floor is easy to install, but tile or vinyl will hold up better, and when you work around repairs that always have water damage, you just know what is going to happen to that laminate flooring.

Also, they now have a type of vinyl flooring that you can install by "lapping"
Over sections. No glue down. Haven't used myself, but I am going to. It works similar to installing a laminate floating floor. HD has it, it's a bit more expensive then other products.

You may consider the water resistant underlayment too.
