    Cycling to lose weight? H.E.L.P
Hi I've just ordered a bike in hope to lose weight on it :)

    I weigh about 9.7 stone and I'm 5ft4 & size 12. IM 18 and female
I hate my body. I just keep gaining weight since I stopped playing sports due to problems with my feet/ankles :(.

How long do you think it would take me to lose 7 pounds cycling?
How much cycling would I have to do?
I try my best not to eat so much junk food, but during 'that time of the month' I eat like like there's no tomorrow which ruins my diet that tiny bit more...

Running isn't good because of my feet/ankles
And swimming costs money and I'm only a student! - that's including transport to the nearest swimming baths. Which isn't very good for me!

Please help! I need to do something about my weight, I don't feel comfortable in any clothes!

    THANK YOU

You have to remember that muscle weighs more than fat. And cycling can make you quit toned. So don't be discouraged if you get into great shape but still weigh the same or even more (how much is 9.7 stones anyway? In pounds?)
Now that you have a bike, are you sure swimming wouldn't be an option? You wouldn't have to pay for transportation since you'd be able to bike. Or does getting into the pool still cost too much?

I'd be able to ride there yeah I suppose!
The pool is a bit too much, but I suppose once a week won't hurt? Or twice if I'm feeling rich haha

9.7 stone is 135.8 pounds. I don't mind looking more toned, but I just want to get rid of my growing love handles and the fat off my thighs and arse in general!

    Will riding do this?

    Thanks! :)

I think that between that and a healthy diet (at least most of the time, I have the same problem every month) it should help you accomplish your goal. My cousin and brother cycle ALL the time and my cousin has some ridiculously low percentage of body fat, like if it were any lower it'd be too long. And my brother hasn't tested his body fat percentage but I would guess it's close to my cousin's. They're both thin and well-toned from all the riding.

Cycling is not the best way to lose fat. A lot depends on how you cycle. I belong to a bike club and the members who are very slim are the ones who cycle 50+ miles a day at a fast 20+ mph.

One of the problems with cycling as a way towards weight loss is that a cyclist is not pedaling constantly. It's a pedal-coast-pedal-coast thing. Unless you are in the group I mentioned.

Doing spin classes is more likely to burn enough calories to make a difference. And diet is an important adjunct to cycling for weight loss.
