    hooking up generator with 4 prong and 3 prong
    I just submitted a post and after some research I have got rid of the jumper for my hot side and now what I have connected is green to green, white to white, and black to Y and left X, which I would assume is neutral, empty. Please tell me if this will suffice? Thanks!

    What are you trying to do? Is the 4 prong on the generator and the 3 prong on a 240 volt tool? Or are you trying to hook into a transfer switch?

    X and Y are both "hots" Green is ground, White neutral.

    We need more information.

    Medic-dan. Thanks a lot for your info. I was unsure of what the hots were. I think were in business now. Will try again today. I know I only have a 12 gauge extension cord but this is for emergency use only. I will never be drawing capacity of my 3750 watt generator. Only for lights and heating system and watching TV in the event of a power outage. The 4 prong is on my generator and the 3 prong is on the house side. And I do realize that this may not be the best way of doing things but will eventually get a transfer switch when I can afford it. And I also know that the main breaker must always be off so I don't hurt anyone and I will never be running a bunch of items at once. This set up is mainly for night use and keeping the fridge running intermittently with the freezer so I don't loose food etc... Thanks again and have a great day dude!!
