I saw this movie around 1995 and have searched everywhere in the net to find it. A single man moves into a house. In the cellar he sees an apparition, a female ghost that seems to be calling him. He finds some artifact from the woman in the cellar, and becomes obsessed with finding out who she was/is.

It turns out she was murdered, drown in a car in a nearby lake. As the police, who he ahs been pestering, are hauling the car out of the lake and finding her remains, the main character intentionally drowns himself to join her. It's not a big movie with lots of special effects, but it is subtle and surprisingly creepy in a way few ghost stories really are.

Happens in a relatively small town, in the mid 90s. Don't remember exactly where but it felt like Northern East Coast, near a large lake. I think the main character was a school teacher, just moved into town to take the position.

He is not bad looking, nice guy and available women in the town try to show interest, but he becomes more and more involved in the apparition, and loses interest in 'this' world. He looks all over, library police records, newspaper archives, to find more clues about who the woman was, having seen her apparition and found a few artifacts in the cellar indicating there was a woman, a woman many don't believe even existed, but who he keeps seeing more and more often, an apparition that seems to be beckoning him.

I believe it was reported that a couple who had lived there moved away suddenly, and the gossip around town was that the husband had gotten a better job or something and they had moved on to the city. They were a young couple maybe a little wild and didn't belong there anyway. In any case there was no report of anyone missing so the police are rolling their eyes and seem reluctant to waste time on fantasies.

Over time the people in town start thinking he's just a little odd and standoffish, even if he does seem nice. The town people don't get ugly about it, just start noticing the main character doesn't want to relate to them, and think it odd.

Coincidentally or maybe not, the police find the car near the end, can't remember if it was someone fishing or if the police had actually followed up on what the main character had reported without letting on. Finding the car with the body in it would have vindicated the main character, it was clear it would explain he had been right all along, but he's already over his head in the lake, underwater swimming towards the woman of his dreams.

I saw a movie like this to . Except the man falls in love with the ghost and continues having sex with the ghost until he gets sick ! Anyone saw a version of this?
