    Screw cutting on a lathe
I have a Microcut lathe that was made in Taiwn in 1985. It is screw cutting capable but I don't know a thing about screwcutting but am anxious to learn. I've tried contacting the makers but without success. If anyone can lead me to an Operators manual or other help I'd be most grateful.

Te Machinery's Handbook has how to do it. I did it few times.

You need the thread cutting tool which I believe is a 60 deg triangle.

Get the diameter of the rod to the Major diameter.

Then there should be an indexer on the leadscrew with even and odd marks on it. That tells you when you can engage the leadscrew after each pass.

I THINK even threads like 10-24 are engaged on any even number. I THINK odd can be any number.

So you set the leadscrew for the TPI you need. Set the tool perpendicular to your work. Put the tool for a cut where you want the threads to be. Turn the dial in and engage the leadscrew at the correct mark. Let it cut to the end.

Reel the tool away from the work and reverse the leadscrew back to the start position. Do the same thing, start the leadscrew and put the tool to the piece for another pass. Repeat as necessary.

Use a caliper for the necessary minor diameter for the thread size.

Looks like I did it slightly wrong. This does it much better.
