I have a large home, 3400 sq. feet with a large pool. In the summer my PG&E bill is $1000 to 1200 a month. The house has two 3 ton AC units. My pool service owner suggested that I let him install a new energy efficient pool pump that is programmable with variable speeds. He said it has a 3 phase pump motor with a converter from single phase to 3 phase. My question is, can I do the same thing with my AC units?

You can install variable speed system in your air handler. Systems such as FanHandler.com.

Compressors are not designed to work at variable speeds.

The blower has the largest current draw. Usually a 3/4 HP motor and so does the compressor, but you can't do anything about the compressor.

There is some efficiency loss in converting from single to 3 phase, but thesre still can be savings.

You can also consider zoning of the AC system.

These guys are big on power correction. We have tested some of there units and they work but the amount of savings will vary depending upon the situation. You do have quite a bit of motor load including the compressors so this might be of help.
