    Briggs 42A707 18.5 Ultra - No Spark
My 18.5 hp Murray Ultra with a Briggs 42A707 mower was running fine a few months ago when I parked it in the shed. Then after 2 weeks of sitting it would't start, not even attempt to turn. I found that I wasn't getting a spark or even any power to the starter. I cleaned the ignition, replaced the solinoid, spark plugs, checked the battery and replaced the battery ground cable and did a lot of cleaning including the carb, air filter, etc.. I also bench tested the starter which tested fine.
The problem is that someone was helping me do the work and they took off the original solinoid off and then left so I had to guess where the wires went and it took a couple of tries to get 12 volts to the starter and coil. (blew a couple of 15 amp fuses in the process). The problem is that after all that the mower would turn over (strong) but I'm still not getting a spark to the plugs and after a few minutes, the coil started melting.
Where can I find the correct wiring diagram for the solinoid and a replacment coil?
I'm also open to any other suggestions.

    Thank you!

    Hi,
Well, you still not get it right; you ran battery voltage in directly on the ignition ground. That is what does what you have described.
Get the machine model number from under the seat an I will try to find your schematic.
The ignition you can get from a Briggs dealer; part #394891 armature.
Be sure to disconnect your negative ("-") battery cable before doing anything so that you do not ruin another one; and until you get the electrical system right.
    Peace,
    Clarke
