I have an upstairs bathroom and when I start the shower/bath it takes several minutes for the hot water to get 'hot'. When it does it is fine. Is there a way to shorten the time the hot water gets to the shower?

The further you are from the water heater the longer the heats going to take to get there. The better the pipe is insulated the longer the water in the pipe will retain it's heat. The only option I know of is they make a instant heater that actually heats the water just before it exits the faucet. I don't really know much about them. I would assume they would be built into the wall near the faucet itself. Not sure how economical either. I found this website.http://store.irawoodinc.com/tawahe.html

Yes, there is a recirculating line. This is a 1/2' line looped up through the attic from the upstairs bathroom back to a small recirculating pump at the water heater. This circulates hot water continuously so that you never have to wait. Another method would be to install a small 17 gallon "kicker heater" in a closet and the more expensive instant heater.
