I have a standard poodle 1 1/2 yrs old. I got her as puppy from a breeder at 15 weeks old. She gives me a doggie bath freq, she will lick my face hands and feet very thorough. She will even turn my hand over to get at the palm of my hand. She was spayed at 6 mo of age. I am not sure if this is a mothering thing, I know it is not submissive behavior on her part. I find it quite annoying at times.:eek:

Usually once I finally get a puppy to quit biting, I give up and let them lick people. You could apply more or less the same techniques as teaching a puppy not to bite. It will require absolute consistency and still take a long time.

Young Labs, which I know best, and other puppies tend to very bad about
Biting. You see a litter of them, and all the ones that are awake are biting
Another one or themselves. I am not even sure they realize that when they are
Alone, if they quit biting, they would quit being bitten. At 3 to 4 months
They are getting their adult teeth, and it seems they spend every waking
Moment biting or chewing. One thing you can do at that stage is to knot and wet a piece of cloth. Then freeze it. The cooling will sooth the gums. Only let the puppy have it when you are there to watch it. I maintain a Lab's favorite chew toy is another
Lab. Otherwise they settle for any person they can. They keep hoping to find
One that won't yelp and jerk their hand away, or growl "Bad dog." and clamp
Their mouth shut. Then offer a chew toy. They keep trying despite hundreds
Of corrections. Another good technique is to quit playing and go away. Be
Sure to praise them when they are playing nice and not biting.

You just have to keep on correcting them, hundreds of times, not dozens.
Provide sturdy, safe toys such as Kongs and Nylabones. Avoid things they can
Chew pieces off and choke on them. Keep them away from electrical cords.
Crates are essential for most young Labs and other dogs.

Because as a puppy she was allowed to lick you it may take a little longer to break this bad habit.

Whatever reason she is doing it i.e.. Submission, grooming, wanting salt. You can get her to stop. However. You MUST be consistent. Every time she does the licking she will need a correction. Now this can be getting up and ignoring her or even a deep throaty growl like NO!
To help discourage her you could wear long gloves (looking silly most likely) while you are around her.

Also, she may have some type of imbalance. Have you taken her to the vet recently? Usually if a dog eats or licks certain things they could be needing something else in their diet. Ask your vet.

A lot has been said. I'd simply add that if you play with your dog it would find more satisfaction and change gears. Buy a few interesting toys and theach it some tricks. It would be proud to show you how smart it is by remembering. You need to dedicate some time and ingenuity to make your dog happy and to share great moments, otherwise than stay calm and get wet from its devotion. I hope you're not sick or lazy.
