Is it a HIPPA violation in the state of Pennsylvania for a dentist to hire an outside customer service company to follow up on patient care. Thanks so much!

It is not a HIPAA violation if the customer service company abides by the HIPAA laws. Many places do this, as much for a customer service reason, but also to make sure the patients are doing well. This cuts down on the time it takes for the office personnel to make these calls.

There are companies that do just this for dentists, doctors, hospitals, etc.

As soon as the medical practitioner hires the service, they are entitled to the info so they can perform their duties. They, then become bound by HIPAA in the performance of those duties.

I am actually trying to start this type of business in my area. I was a dental hygienist for 21 years and have lots of connections. You don't by any chance know any names of companies that provide this service do you? I have done soooo much research and can't find anyone so of course I thought I had a novel idea. You are the only person who has heard of such a business and I would love any thoughts you have. Thanks again for your help!

By reading the law at hipaa.org. When you receive treatment from a practitioner, that practitioner can allow anyone under his control to see your info. That person or entity is then bound by the rules just as if they were a direct employee if the practitioner.
