I had my last period on June 3rd. I miscarried earlier this year and since then I do not ovulate normally or have a regular cycle. The Dr’s have been unable to tell me how far along I am. Based on an ultra sound I had on 7/31/09 they said that I am showing to be about 5 weeks 5 days. But based on LMP I should be closer to 9 weeks. I have a feeling that I conceived on June 23rd. Is it possible that my dates are just that strange and the baby could be fine? Also based on ultra sound they can see the fetal pole, but as of yet no heart beat. My understanding is that the heart beat cannot be seen until after 6 weeks. I have also had some slight spotting. It is pink / brown. But with no cramping at all. I notice the spotting when I use the rest room. It doesn’t even show in my panties. Do I have reason to be hopeful that this baby can be OK?

If you did conceive around June 23rd, you would be about 5 weeks and a few days. This is from the likely fertilization age... whereas the 9 weeks (from about the time of your last period) would be gestational age. Neither is an exact science, but the dates from an ultrasound tend to be a bit closer to the mark.

Since there is some question as to how far along you actually are, they will likely do another ultrasound with in the next few weeks. Seeing the heartbeat will give them a better idea.

The slight spotting can be normal in early pregnancy, and usually not a concern unless it increases in amount, is red, and you have cramping along with it, but certainly let your doctor be aware of it.
