The belt that turns the drum sounds broken. I recently ordered a belt & replaced it for my dryer. I ordered the part from the manufacturer and looked up online guide to replace it. Saved $100 bucks by doing it myself with little to no issues.

Thank you for yor response. I still have a question. The motor sounds as if it is struggling/stuck then the motor shuts off. If the belt was broken wouldn't the motor run freely and the drum just wouldn't turn?
    Thank you

The motor in my dryer sounded different as well. My guess would be the tension of the actual belt would change the sound. Just looked on Appliance Parts -Research, Repair & Replace.. The belt is $15 and motor looks to be $35 for your dryer. I'd try belt first, since cheaper faster fix.

You may have something caught in the blower. The motor is drawing too much current and is tripping the overload built into the motor. Take the back off and remove the blower housing on the left hand side. The blower should turn free, keeping in mind that it is still attached to the belt and the drum and it will have a little resistance. If your blower is is free of debris and turns freely then you may have a motor problem.

Rear bearing sounds frozen. Searspartsdirect doesn't have a diagram, but the bearing is about $25.

Try to turn the drum by hand. Some dryers might loose the belt if turned the wrong way.

Whirlpool dryers do not have rear bearings so do not look for one.
