I was wondering if it is likely or even possible to get a speeding ticket for going only about 8 or 10 kilometers over the limit in the city. I don't drive recklessly but I often go 58 or 60 in a 50 zone for example. I've heard that radar guns are not that accurate and police often don't bother giving tickets to people going 10 or even 15 over the limit because the driver would have a good chance of getting the ticket thrown out in court.

Hello Earl:

Did I tell you about the time down in Arizona when I was on this back road doing 60. The speed limit was 55, but I knew everybody went faster - much faster. I approached a cop, but I figured he wouldn't stop me, so, I stayed at 60. Then when I got up right behind him, I passed him going 60, and not an MPH more. Yup. He stopped me, yelled at me and gave me a ticket...

I hate cops.

Speeding slightly (as you put it) is the same as being "a little bit pregnant". Speeding is speeding whether it is one mile over the limit or 90. Only with the 5 miles or less over the limit the fine is not as much as say 90 over the limit.

My mother-in-law always swore that you're allowed 10% over the limit. So 55 in a 50 zone would be fine.

She tried explaining that theory to every cop that every pulled her over. They didn't buy it. ;)

Yes and no. Yes in that the police often allow for a little leeway in a speeding situation before actually pulling you over and giving you a summons. But no in that, if a police officer clocks you going over the speed limit, by whatever amount, and testifies in court that he clocked you doing whatever and has the radar's calibration papers to back himself up then no judge would ever throw it out.

I always go 5 over - in town, on the highway, on the freeway. I've gotten only 2 speeding tickets in my life(knock on wood). Both times, the cop was an a-hole; both times, I got it plead down to something else and my insurance hasn't gone up one cent.

I also got pulled over 3 other times. Those cops were awesome and didn't ticket me at all.
