Wow! I have always just put them on newspaper on the kitchen counter and it worked great. Actually I just found out about that last year.:)

Toms, also emit ethylene when they ripen, If you were to wrap your toms with that newsprint,
You'll find they will ripen faster.

Unless you want to try jmjoseph's recipe,

• wrap any greenies left at the end of the season in newsprint.
• Place them in something like a milk crate
• Start with a section of newsprint
• Then a layer of wrapped toms
• section of newsprint
• layer of toms
• till you reach the top
• Then cover with a section
• store them in a cool to warm dark place
• and check'em 'bout once a week.

Depending on how many you start with, you could have fresh toms past Christmas. That's what GrandMa did.

Ethylene is also like a hormone to a plant, and it uses it to give them a preservativeness... :confused: (Eddie, get the dictionary).. that helps the fruit to stay fresher longer.

(Newsprint = Newspaper. That's what its called in the Industry....Not until it leaves the Newspaper Production Facility is it called "Newspaper" I worked for the local paper for 32years, and old habits are hard to break.)

It's still lookin' healthy, but no rooting so far.

I did look for a long time LOL... but I find finding things in pictures hard to do at times :D. I half thought that the little spot on the slab that the mauls are on by the flipped up slab was a mouse.. guess it wasn't :D *noticed that before K told us there was no mouse after I posted of course lol*

Next Chance of Showers, T-storms today into tonight, POP 40%
New rainfall amounts between a tenth and, quarter inch except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Since I'm trying a new propagation method for toms, BB's vertical growth has stopped at 59”,
And his girth should start to increase, its at 44” now.

Taking a hint from starting impatiens cuttings in H2o, I am experimenting with BB's main stem, see pix.
As you can see, there are whitish nodules on the stem, where I'm hoping the roots will begin to start.
Those little nubs in the crotch, where I trimmed the larger leaves are actually sucker stems starting to grow.

When first placed into the H2o, air bubbles formed around the individual hairs on the stem,
And have since reduced to these nodules.

It looks like I'm not the only one to have tried this: Toms from cuttings, Google

Speaking of propagation...

One of my other duties in the morning is helping our yellow squash to pollinate.
I noticed that it has a lot of flowers, but its not fruiting, so I did what all good AMHD'ers do...

I searched high... I searched low, up, down, in, out, over here, over there... over hill, over dale...
what's that eddie?....oh yea...back to topic
Well, after careful observation I saw there weren't any flying insects flyin' around
So I got out my trusty Q-tip and I'm givin' all the blossoms a hand... Oops...

I mean I'm pollinating them artificially by dabbing each blossom.
I'm sooo excited, I can't wait to see fruition!. b your rubbin off on me

Welll... That's 'bout it for this week, all the chores are done.

Need to run an errand an when I get back watch a little of nascar practice.
Have dinner ready for the DW, wait for the next T-storm...

Oh an eddie needs to change the oil in the plane, somthin 'bout JD and pineapples.

Just an update on "rooting" BB's cutting.

The pix below shows the nodules are getting larger, and there's also an interesting development.

There is growth around the stem and aborted shoot that reminds me of the filaments of the Lophoporate phyla or more commonly know as tube worm. Bottom pix.

The yellow squash has finally received its first flying pollinator, and I notice he/she did a much better job than me, so its all right with me if they want the job.

We have had such hot weather that I need to water at 2 pm even though they will be getting water at 3 pm. They are not just limpy, but almost dried out looking. They get water at 8 am when I am at work, but at 104 on and off for the last month, nothing is helping.

I'm thinking about moving my Hybrid Early Girl into a shadier area.

I plan on making Salsa on Thursday or Friday. Tuesday is corn day, unless I get lazy, then Wednesday.:)

Although my climate is not as harsh as in your area I am having a similar experience.

In this past week we have received almost 2" of rain with 0.22" last evening, and when I went out this morning BB was limp.

Moving Early Girl would be prudent I would even suggest an insulator for the container, like an old blanket or cardboard box.

Next year I'm planning on setting up at least one of my containers in a Zeer Pot fashion The Zeer Pot
Even though the Nigerians are claiming it's their invention, and there are many Fathers of Thermodynamics.

Unfortunately Climate Prediction Center Has officially declared an El Nino' into the fall of 2010
Which should mean "Status Quo" for the U.S. until then.

I'm thinking of the Zeer pot also!:) for next year in the hot area, I can't do it now with my hybrid because it is in a plastic pot.

I thought about it this afternoon, but worried it might not work because of no cloth over the top, but I guess anything might help. :D
