I wonder if any one has had trouble with getting rid of yeast infections in their dogs? My cockapoo is having an on going problem that just won't seem to quit. I give her the meds for the two to three weeks and it clears up for about three weeks and comes back in the one ear again. My vet said she has a resistant strain and it might take four to eight weeks of meds this time. Poor dog I know it hurt her and smells real bad, so I know it has got to bother her nose more than mine. Any tips on how to keep the smell down? I wash her ear with a warm cloth and baby soap, but that doesn't seem to help much.

You might try this but you will have to get another person to hold her down. Take 91% Isopropyl Alcohol and some Q-tips. Saturate the Q-tip with the alcohol and swab the inside of her ears. It will take probably at least a dozen or so Q-tips to get all the gook out of the ear canals. You dog won't like it one bit but it has to be done. The 91% can be bought at Walmart for about $3 for a big bottle. My Jack Russell had something very similar (or the same thing) in her ears. The ears did clear up but you can't do the alcohol thing every day. I, too, used meds in the ears for a long time for what I thought was mites but it was a yeast infection she got. If your dog only has it in one ear, treat the other ear as well as it can spread into the other ear as my dogs ears did. I would only do the alcohol thing every 3 or 4 days though. Be sure to have someone hold the dog's head in a down position on a flat surface to properly get into the ear canal. The smell and the pus will definitely get cleared out in a few sessions but keep it up until all the pus is cleared up.

When you were medicating her ears, were you cleaning them as well?

Have you tried plucking her ears?

Removing the hair can help reduce infections.
You just grab a very small amount of hair with your fingers and pull. If you have trouble you can get some forceps to grab with.
Yes, it does hurt but no more than plucking your own eyebrows and it doesn't need to be done too often.

Unfortunately it is a common problem with drop eared breeds especially poodles and cockers.

Yes I clean her ears every time I notice stuff in them. I keep using baby soap as the vet said it was the least harmful to use daily. I can't do the aclohol thing though as she has a growth that needs to be removed when the infection gets cleared up. I have a groomer who keeps the hair clipped around her ears for me. I just wanted to know if there was something I could do about the smell. It bothers her and me.:confused:Poor girl goes and hides to get away from the smell.

Check right inside her ears to see if there is hair growing inside the canal. Your groomer may remove it as part of the service but it can't be clipped away, you would have to ask.

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do for the smell until the infection has cleared up. Just keep them clean and let the meds do their work.

My cocker has the same proublem and its hard to get ride of off and on off and on. However the Vet gave me this solustion Half isoproply alcohol and half WHITE vinegar he said this should be used after the dog has been groomed just in case the groomer had got water in there ear without knowing. It also returned the PH balance of the ear to normal. This seems to help and all you have to do is put a few drops in the ear and its less invasive. Also not sure if your vet gave you but I was also given an Ear wash which maskes the smell some maybe see if you can get that. Good luck

Thanks for all your help:)I just cleaned her ears again:rolleyes:I feel so sorry for her, I just wish I could snap my fingers and make it go away;). I'll try to keep you posted on how things are going. I will ask my vet about the alcohol and vineger solution. I am the one who baths her so I will make sure I don't get any water in her ears. Also I will check about the hair inside the ears. Again I am so glad we have this site to go to, thanks to whoever started it.

Well now I am just going nuts. I am sure it is the growth in her ear that needs to be removed, but here is the rub the infection just goes in cycles of OK to worse then OK. The vet will not remove the growth until the infection goes away. I sincerely feel that if the growth were gone the infection would go away as I can't get everything that is seeping out, because the growth is in the way. Any ideas?
The growth is blocking the ear canal.

I'm with twinkidooter on this one. Get rid of it the same way you would ear mites.

My dog has the same problem with her ears you clean them every week with 1/2 white vinegar and 1/2 distilled water and cotton balls
