Starting a small House Cleaning Business
I want to start a house cleaning business. I'm thinking about hiring three people or more for this. How do I get a bond or insurance? Which are the best companies?

    Hi, kalamanjaro!

The first question that I have for you is, how much experience do you actually have cleaning for others in order to make a profit for yourself, please?

Once you've answered that, we can proceed from there.

    Thanks!

I built my house cleaning business from the ground up to compete with the franchises. With this experience, I can tell you there is much more to running a profitable business than just hiring people! This is one of the hardest businesses to build due to customer expectations and what your employees are willing to do. The people who take cleaning jobs don't want the job... they NEED it. Therefore, motivating them is critical to your success.

You must decide if you will hire employees or sub-contract the work.

Either way, you (or they) will need a bond which you get through insurance companies that offer them. If you hire employees, you need Worker's Comp - ask your insurance agent and compare rates to what your state provides. The state is usually has lower rates.

Unless you act as a broker for sub-contractors and let them manage the clients, you must hire on employee status to control the quality of work otherwise, the IRS will reclassify them for you and you'll end up paying back taxes.

    Hope this helps! :)
