John deere stx 38 lawn mower
I own a john deere lawn mower stx 38 with kohler 12.5 hp 12.15 spec #, s/n 1914409078. Ihad it running this spring, but all a sudden I can't get it started. I do not have any spark at the plug. I have charged the battery, cleaned the connections, checked the safety switch under the seat, which seems to be fine. I pulled the fly wheel looking for points, but there is none. However I did find a loose magnet which I glued back in place with epoxy cement. I still can't get it started. Any suggestions? Bob:

    Hi,
Well, cannot say if your charging system is healthy; that was the loose magnet.
First you must separate the engine from the frame. Do this by unplugging the "T" shaped connector on the left side of the engine. No ignition ground and not charging now. I think they are white and yellow wires, but I could remember wrong.
At any rate now try to crank the engine. If it is in the engine, it will not start. If it is in the frame it will. My guess is it will, if your description is accurate. (Lock park brake.)
If it does you can try lightly plugging the connctors together. It should try to die.
If all this comes to pass, my guess is ignition switch. Just because one circuit (starter) is working does not mean others are.
    Peace,
    Clarke

On the side of the motor there is an ignition switch I think its called. Its about the size of a quarter I would replace that. I used to have a john deer and that is what I found out that was bad. I replaced that and it fixed the problem.
