My 5 year old asked why we don't eat brown eggs. And I said 'well... we just eat white eggs... I don't know'

Daughter-"do we not like brown eggs? im white and i like brown people...is there something wrong with brown?"

Out of the mouth of babes eh?

So needless to say, I promised her we would get brown colored eggs next payday :)

I was curious to know what IS the diffrence between white eggs and brown eggs? Or are they the same? :P

What is the difference you ask? The difference is the eggs are produced by different strains of chickens. Both brown and white eggs are the same nutritionally. I eat both brown and white colored eggs and find absolutely no difference whatsoever in the taste, texture, etc but the brown eggs do cost a few cents more at the store.

Mostly, it's just the genetics of the chicken that laid them, and possibly what she eats.

Most farm hens (Rhode Island Reds, Orpingtons, other reds) lay brown eggs. White Leghorns (and probably some other varieties) lay white eggs. White Leghorns are (as far as I know) the commercial laying hens of choice, so most eggs for sale are white. That's my understanding of it...

Urban legend says brown eggs are healthier (though as far as I know there is absolutely no difference), probably because people associate brown eggs with farm eggs from free range hens, which definitely ARE healthier and more nutritious.
Farmers usually prefer all-purpose chickens, good for eggs AND meat, and those varieties usually lay red eggs.

Hehe so we got some brown eggs and ate them today :D and they were yummy just like any other egg.

I do agree with twinky however, it seemd to me that the brown egg shells were thicker.

Hey, that explained why my grandparents had chickens with brown eggs. Dumb chickens, they don't even get upset when you reach under them and steal their eggs. I also learned that chickens are color blind too to, I think, red light. So when your gathering them up for processing, they are in the dark and can't see anyone coming.

The difference between brown eggs and white eggs is the same difference between blacks people and white people, and the answer is absolutely nothing we all bleed the same color, all of blood pump blue in the veins until air hit. I can see now your kids will grow up and be well round. Racist start in the home so always be open and honest with kids if no they'll go somewhere else. Good Luck! Yes you did and, well.. that was a little deep, but I understand what you were saying. I love the Brown Eggs, because you never know what you are going to get inside.:D I get a lot of double yolks and I love the yolks.
I pay the same price as white, sometimes cheaper at Costco and not in bulk. Trader Joes has a good price too.

I have a few chickens. And one of them actually lays pale blue eggs. So from the three colors; blue, brown, and white. I can taste no difference. I think the reason the brown are more expensive is because of the color. When you boil a brown egg over a white my little brother gets excited cause when he cracks it it's a different color on the inside. Like Easter eggs without the work he says. I love my brown egg laying chickens though. They're cuter than the other kinds.

Eggs are either brown or white. Some people think that brown eggs are healthier than white eggs, although this is a myth and there is no reason to think this. Maybe they are comparing eggs to brown and white bread!

Basically, it all boils down to the breed of the hen that lays the egg. Hens with white feathers and white ear lobes lay white eggs and hens with red feathers and red ear lobes lay brown eggs. There is absolutely no nutritional difference between white or brown eggs, neither one is better or healthier than the other.

Brown eggs may be more expensive than white eggs, but this is only because brown hens are larger and therefore need more food.
