    Lubrication for wheels and drive gears on self-propelled mower?
    I have a 1999 MTD Yardman 21" Self-propelled Mulching Mower, model 12A-559K401. One of the handle brackets broke and I ordered new part. Decided it was a good time to do some additional work and replace the front drive wheels, gears, dowel pins, and dust covers. The wheel bushings had worn and became so wobbly that the gears sometimes did not mesh to drive the front wheels, especially on one side.

    Question: What, if any, lubrication should be used on the drive gears and inner wheels? Seems like any lube would attract dirt, even with new cheap- "dust covers." But seems like there should be some lubrication. I was thinking light grease inside the drive gears and on the output shaft, and light oil on the outside of the gears and inner wheel gears. Thoughts?

    Hi,
    Everything should be clean and fitting well. Assemble dry! Lube only attracts dirt which wears things out quicker.

    I'd lube only lightly lube the wheel bushings unless they are oilite bearings, A sintered bronze bearing.
