I've been using CCleaner for about a year now, ever since it was recommended on this site. It's my favorite application.

I've notice a minor problem on all 3 of my computers (running XP SP3), when I get the message to update to a newer version.

As I am going through the Update process, and I get to the "Install" phase, every time, and on all 3 of my systems, when I hit "Next" to Install, it installs about 10% of the update (takes about 1 second), and I get an error and the install freezes.

The error message is this (with 3 buttons at bottom): Error opening file for writing: C:\Program Files\CCleaner\CCleaner.exe Click ABORT to stop installation, RETRY to try again, or IGNORE to skip this file.

When I click RETRY, the program always continues installing successfully, with no other stalls. This happens every time, without exception.

It has been doing this for the past few months, but since I can always finish the install by clicking RETRY, I haven't yet dealt with it (until now).

Has anyone else encountered this?

Do you know what the problem is and how to correct it?

I hope I don't need to uninstall and reinstall, as I have all these cookies saved, and everything configured just so.

Better to uninstall c cleaner don't use it u can clean your hard by using clean up tool in widows xp it works better than cc cleaner

I love CCleaner. I can select which cookies to ignore, and do a registry scan as well. It's incredibly fast and I've never had a problem with it deleting anything critical.

I stayed with IE7, so no issue there.

I agree that uninstalling and reinstalling it may be the best solution. I was just trying to avoid the whole set up process again.

The way to fix that problem is this.

Don't update.
Just down the latest version from filehippo.com when there's a new version available.
In ccleaner, in the settings turn off updates. Its not necessary, as the versions don't change much in themselves other than the look these days really. Trust me.

Uninstall the old version before you add the new one on just over write it the old one.
The windows cleaner is not the one I would recommend at all.

This is untrue.

In case anyone else searches and finds this thread, I didn't want this comment to go unrefuted. CCLeaner is the probably the best at what it does for the price. Problems updating notwithstanding (uninstall and clean install new version should work just fine), CCleaner is highly recommended on all counts.

You are actually the person that originally recommended CCleaner to me, and I think it's great. Can't thank you enough. I've recommended it to everyone I know.

Can you clarify a couple things for me please?

1) Should I uninstall CCleaner every time there is a new update? I must have done 10 successful updates since my original install before this freezing problem started.

2) Do you think one fresh install will allow me to update without uninstalling for future updates?

3) Several people have suggested that XP's Disk Clean Up is better than CCleaner. Should I still be using Disk Clean Up as well on my monthly PC maintenance, or is CCleaner enough? I've essentially abandoned Disk Clean Up in favor of CCleaner.

Ok, now that I got that off my chest, I actually take all these things in stride nowadays. I've forever given up on the idea of a "permanent solution" to any one problem.

So, the answer to your questions are:

1) No, unless you end up needing to. :)
2) Yes, unless it doesn't. :) :)
3) Hey! A question I can answer. Answer: For me, I do not clutter my system with multiple apps doing variations of the same thing. The people that do... well, they either have far too much time on their hands, far more patience than I do, or NEED all the extra garbage due to really poor computer usage habits. :) :) :)

CCleaner for system/registry tweaks/cleanup - I even like CCleaner's "uninstall programs" and "startup config" modules better than Windows'.

AVG Free - perfectly fine for most home uses, I have the Pro version on my work machines. Effortless.

ZoneAlarm Free Firewall - need I say more?

I agree with you in keeping my PC lean. The fewer the apps, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

Regarding your comment about not using multiple apps for the same task, I have been told many times, when it comes to Spy or Mal-ware scanners, you should have at least 2, as there isn't a single app that can catch all the junk out there.

If fact, recently I posted a question on this site asking for recommendations on anti-spyware. I was shocked at the number of different apps that people swear is the best you can get.

I run 2 anti-spy (mal) ware apps now. They used to be Spybot and CA (comes free from my ISP). Then I read that CA is the worst (Consumer Reports) and Spybot is outdated.

After hours of reading reviews, I am now settled on SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes (high ratings from PC Mag and Cnet). People seemed to be the most passionate about these 2 being able to do magical things that other apps can't do. I must admit, they are both much faster than Spybot. Anyway, I got sick of researching this topic and will stay with these 2 apps for now.

Thank you very much for the list of recommended freeware. I've heard great things about AVG.

UPDATE:

Good News. Just updated my CCleaner from ver 2.22.940 to 2.22.968.

This time I closed the CCleaner app before installing the update, and it installed flawlessly. No errors, no freezing.
