Meauring square footage for painting bid?
Hi, new to this. I am a painter and recently got a call about a interior job of entire house, Usually paint by the hour but client wants a bid. I read that most contractors bid by the square foot of room but I don't know how to measure. Anybody know?

A room 10x12=
10+12+10+12=44 feet around the room
44'x8' (height of wall) = 352 square foot of wall space.

A square foot measurement (not a volume measurement) is simply the height of the wall X the length = square footage of that wall.

Hi, nikjacks!
The manner that you'll be applying the paint, how many coats that you'll be applying and any preparation that you'll need to do to the surfaces to be painted will also make a difference in your bidding price. So, you also might want to take that into consideration.
Thanks!

Lets' follow-up... say there was the 352 sq ft of wall space... what is the range in labor cost per foot... what would be a fair price? 1 dollar, 3 dollars? Lets assume the walls are in good shape and prep is minimal... and one door and one 3x5 window to paint around... skip closet

The amount of money per square foot u bid will depend on how bad u want the job.
Take one of your old jobs and measure it.
Divide the sq ft by amount u got for job. This will tell u how much u got per sq ft.
If room was 10 by 10 8 feet high=320 sq ft for walls.
ceiling is 100 sq ft.
total 420sq ft
Received $300
divide 420by300=$1.40 per sq ft
This would include all painting u did in that room. IE doors windows trim

An easy way to figure your bid is to determin how long you think it will take you to compleat the job then figure how much you want per hr. add them up throw in a little extra to cover unexpected b.s. then give your bid

Hi:
I guess my question is this? If a room is 12X12... does that make it 144sq ft or do you factor in the 8ft high wall height as well?
Also, is $1.25 per square foot the going rate for walls? What is the going rate for windows and doors and crown and base molding (using oil-base)?

We bought a house. It was just what we wanted and our realtor assisted in finding it and successfully negotiated the deal. We had the house inspected and the mortgage company is fine with everything. The house is on MLS as 2000 square feet but in fact is about 1800.
We don't really care as the...
