How do I tell if a past user is using Meth again?
My boyfriend is a past user of Meth. Now that he is a truck drive I worry that he is using but I don't have evidence. When he comes home he breaks out into hives and he has very dry skin. I'm not sure if these are symptoms of Meth, he doesn't seem irritated, he's not skinny or losing weight and there's not a temper, so it doesn't sound like he's using, but those hives and dry skin concern me because he wasn't like that before.

Can anyone tell me if those are side effects of someone getting off the drug? Maybe he's doing it while he travels and gets off for a few weeks to come home... Just guessing.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hello m:

Meth is not a drug that one can stop for a few weeks and then take it up again on a continuing basis. He'd be having lots more problems than hives.

I'd ask him. Maybe the communication problem you're having is WORSE than any potential drug abuse - or it might even be the CAUSE of it.

Not trying to argue or anything, but... I am a former meth user and during my time of using I stopped for up to 7 years and then went back to it for 2 years. I've used meth off and on since I was 15. I'm 34 now and never really saw myself as addicted to it, up until the last two years I was on it. I have now been clean from it for about 3 years and have no desire what so ever to pick up that habit again, but yeah some people can stop using for a few weeks and pick it up again on a continuing basis.

He may be replacing his meth addiction with another substance such as an opiut (sp?). I know some have reactions with hives and skin breakouts with drugs like Vicodin or percocet. Just a thought?
