Wrongly filed 1040NR instead of 1040 where to send 1040X?
I am amending my tax return by 1040X. I had originally filed 1040NR but later I realized that I should have filed 1040. When I first filed my 1040NR, I was living in Georgia. Now I am in the state of Washington. In the instructions manual of 1040X it says: "If Form 1040X includes a Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ, mail it to the Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service Center, Austin, TX 73301-0215, USA."

What does it mean for 1040X to include form 1040NR? Does it apply to me? Where should I send my 1040X?

    Thanks.

Evidently your Form 1040X does not include 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ. It will include Form 1040. So you do not mail your 1040X and properly done 1040 to Austin. Make sure to write Amended on top of Form 1040.

I disagree. If your original return was mailed to Austin, Texas, then mail the amendment to Austin, Texas as well.

Oops. I already sent them to California. What should I do now? Should I fill another one and send it to Austin or are they going to forward it?

No, you need not file another return. IRS will forward it to the proper address.

Go to the IRS website (www.irs.gov) and search "Where to file".

A map will come up when you click on the response, then click the state of Minnesota.

Then a list of addresses (to include on for Form 1040X) will be displayed.

Hello, I am an F-1 student. I used E-file to file my federal return and found today that it used 1040 instead of 1040NR, which I should have used as I have been in US only for 4 years. I researched that I have to file 1040X and 1040NR(EZ) and 8843 and send it as soon as possible. My return from...

Hi, I came to the US in Fall 04 and since then have been continuously on an F-1 student visa. I filed form 1040NR-EZ for 2004, but for 2005 I hired a CPA who (without informing me) filed a 1040 on my behalf. In there, he claimed an education credit (or something to that effect) which effectively...
