Running out of gas and my CHECK ENGINE light
    Hi there,

I ran out of gas today, I was able to sputter into the gas station. Before shutting off the engine to gas up, the check engine light came on. I didn't think much about it cause I had just evaporated my gas tank. Well, it's a five hours later and the light is still on. Has it been triggered by the gas tank, or is there a problem??

BTW, I just bought this car 4 days ago, if there is a problem is there some sort of grace period for returning it with no penalties? I bought it from a private party...

You bought it from a private party, therefore you bought it "as is" and there is no grace period during which you can return it. It's possible that the check engine light may have been triggered by the empty gas tank. 4 days of ownership isn't a long time to tell, but how was the car's performance prior to running out of gas? And how has it been since refilling the tank? Have a technician check it out ; usually their diagnostic equipment can readily tell what's triggering the check engine light.

A lot of times that light comes on for absolutely no reason. I heard that it is programmed to come on after so many miles.

Are you having any of the least little problems other than the light?

You might want to take it to get checked and they can turn the light off.

There was a tune-up before I bought it. There's been no other problems what-so-ever.

Had to spread it, but this may well be the case.

If it just had a tune-up, then it should be running accordingly. Perhaps a replacement part wasn't properly fitted and that could be what's triggering the check engine light.
