You must use color remover first to get out the artificial pigment in the hair. ColorFix, Color Oops, or Igora phantom are the preferred materials. Effasol and Color Zap are bleaches and might also work, but they will damage the hair more than the preferred materials.

She might have to use bleach before re-dyeing to blonde.

I'm not sure how her roots would look too bad if she's a natural medium blonde.

Sally Beauty Supply carries them. You can get them online:

    Instructions for ColorFix
Hair Color, Hair Care and The No More Bad Hair Days Kit by Robert Craig Salon Products, Ltd.

    Price and ordering here:
    Hair Color Correction

You can't simply use a lighter haircoloring to make the hair lighter. The developer put the pigment into the hair when it was dyed; there's no reason to expect that developer (the lightening agent) will take it out. Colorists often say, "Haircolor won't lighten haircolor", and they're right. ColorFix dissolves artificial pigment and lets you wash it out. Depending on how dark the hair is, you might have to use more than one application.

    It's a bit smelly (like a perm).

    Aaah. Haircolor regret.

The sudden change associated with coloring hair can be shocking. Most people find that if they get used to it, and if they perfect the color, they get along much better with it.
