    High Triglyceride
    Hey all,

My boyfriend is 34 years old, very active (goes to the gym 3 times a week and walks almost to every where he want to go), his BMI is whithin the normal ranges, and eat almost healthy diets every day, but he loves to eat ice cream and candies and whenever we are on vacation he drinks beer so much.but only on vacations which is almost twise a year for a week each.

He recently had a blood test that shows that he has high Triglyceride levels, and we are trying to lower this level to at least 200 mg/dL or below,

The doctor advised him to eat half of every thing he usually eats and exersice more,

I want to know if he can eat the below foods cause I can't find anything about them through the internet:

Dark Choclete , Digestice biscuits " aka Macvities hobnobs" the whole grain ones with oatmeal, low fat youghart or skimmed if there are any, skimmed milk , vodka and what are the light alcahol baverage, dried fruits and honey.

    Thanks,,

    Sireen

Triglycerides are primarily from eating too many carbohydrates (and also from simply eating too much). Almost anything is OK unless you eat too much of it. Dried fruits, for example, are fine -- but they're high in sugars so eating too much can lead to high triglycerides. Honey, ice cream, candies, dried fruits all are high in carbohydrates. Eat in moderation. Skim milk contains milk sugar, but it's high in protein and mostly water so it's unlikely that you'll get too much of that.

Light alcoholic beverages are those without a lot of alcohol (beer -- but then again, in moderation).

Triglycerides are the main form of fat in foods. If you consume excess calories regardless from any source - carbohydrates, fats or protein, your body will turn the excess calories into triglycerides for storage as body fat.
I'm a Diet Tech @ a hospital. Is your boyfriend overweight? Generally, elevated TRIG are in individuals that are overwt. Try to cut back on portions first rather than eliminating your fave foods - but the overall goal is to cut back on fat/heavier foods. HOWEVER I always tell my patients that the SMALL changes they make will help the overall BIG picture! (ex: instead of 2% milk switch to 1% w/ goal of skim). If he's active that is GREAT!! Keep it up! Start adding high fiber foods (will increase your HDL - good cholesterol). I would start to limit the intake of sugar though - if he tolerates sugar alcohols start doing substitutes/ lighter versions (ex: Crystal Light/frozen ygrt or light ice cream vs. Kool-aid/ice cream). I'd limit alcohol intake - but it's hard to tell a guy to give up his beer :) Ask your MD about adding OMEGA-3 fatty acids into his diet (flax seed) or eat more FISH :) I hope some of these suggestions help!! Start making changes now so that he doesn't live w/ heart disease/conditions the rest of his life!!

    Thank you peanut99,

We started cutting back on his food portions and start to take skimmed milk rather than whole, he has lost 3 kilo grams, which is good " i think" , as u said SMALL changes will help the overall BIG picture.

Overall, we always go for the healthier option of food we consume,, and the beer is only limited to vacations 1 week/year. So I think his levels should back to normal soon.

    Thanks again.

Was this a fasting blood test?. meaning no food or drink for something like 10-12 hours before?

I've had a high trigly. Reading high and then followed up with a fasting blood test which showed it was rock solid fine... just curious...
