    The Earth/Ground is wire has a direct connection with ground(at same potential).
    It is the 3rd prong on a drill, if a Hot wire breaks free and touches the case, it will short to ground and trip breaker, instead of becoming Live.
    Ground and neutral connect to one common spot at the Service.
