How to safely burn the grass in a ditch.
We live in the country and have a large ditch in front of our house. It is too deep to mow and too large to weedwhack. We would like to try a controlled burn but don't know how to start. I would like some one who has done this or knows someone who has, what is the safest way to burn this ditch? When is the best time? We tried it last year but it just wouldn't burn. We need help because in an otherwise nice looking front yard, the ditch makes it look horrible.

A conrolled burn is having a running hose at hand and a keen eye. The problem is, even though you may not see the fire, as you think all is extinguished, it can be smoldering underground and spreading that way.

I have never done a burn off in a ditch, only in a field. The ditch may be a problem because of damp. I would suggest you call your local fire department and ask them for advice on how to proceed. I called before I decided to do a burn off and was told it was a good idea because to be forwarned was to be forarmed.

How to burn a ditch [ 2 Answers ]

We live out in the country. The ditch in the front of our property is very deep. We are unable to cut it with a riding mower as we do the rest of the lawn. Using a push mower is very strenuous. Weed-whacking is almost as impossible. We have thought that the only way to maintain the ditch would...
