    Bath tub drain
    When I let the water out of my tube I hear water draining I my sink down stairs I have a split level home bath tub is on the upper floor and the sink is on the lower floor below the main floor which is on the lower level what may cause this:mad:

    Hey Tony,
    Would the sound be a "bubble" or a "gurgle" or are you saying when you drain the tub it backs up into the downstairs sink? Back to you Tony! Tom

    Hi Tony,

    A "gurgle" indicates a vent problem. What's happening is the water draining from the tub sets up a vacuum. As a rule this is relieved by the vent. However if the vent's clogged or blocked the vacuum attempts to relieve itself by pulling air through the nearest trap. This is the sound you hear. What puzzles me is since the sink should have its own vent the noise should come from upstairs. The only explanation Is that both the lavatory vent and the kitchen vent's blocked but that doesn't seem too likely either. Can you gve me any more history or details? Cheers, Tom

    To Speedball 1 from bigtony533... follow up bath tbe drain... besides gurgle there is a small amount of water appearing in the sink... big tony here..

    Hey BIG Tony,
    Are you on a septic tank or city sewer?
    The fact that you have water backing up in the basement sink tells me that you have a partial clog in your drain and it needs to be snaked out. The clog is downstream from the basement sink so the snake will have to be sent down the vent of the sink unless there's a cleanout in the basement on the stack or in the floor. As for the toilet flushing, This can be explained
    If there was a clog that impeded the discharge and sent a backflow that bounced back up the line. When the backflow drained away the back pressure was off the toilet and the suction completed the flush. Good luck, Tom
