Hi,
Okay, it must be a Briggs since they use those designations. On the engine Model number is either 5 or 6 six number or letters. If 5 the first is the cubic inches; if 6, same is true. Next is a model version designation that begins at zero and can virtually run through most of the alphabet for some models. The next three digits describe the bearings in the engine, the carb, the starter, etc.
The Type number is the sub-version number that describes parts to that particular engine with the first 4 digits; the last 2 are called a trim number, paint color, etc.
Finally, the Code is the date of manufacture broken into 4 parts. The first 2 are the last two digits of the year. The next 2 are the calender month, 1 to 12. The next 2 are the day of the month, 1 to 28, 29, 30 or 31. The final 2 could be numbers and/or letters and are a factory and shift of operation that only Briggs can decipher.
Example: 991023AL is
99 = 1999
10 = October
23 = 23rd day
AL = factory and shift
Peace,
Clarke

Hi,
28 = 28 cu. in.
1 = second version of the engine
7 = one-piece carb (refers to carb body)
0 = plain bearings top and bottom on crank
7 = electric start
0415 = subversion used with parts listing
? = trim missing
91 = 1991
05 = May
14 = 14th
11 = factory and shift (got me)
Peace,
Clarke

Hi,
That is a Murray rider. I cannot look it up because it is a 1991 model and available parts breadowns go back to 1994 currently. This is because Briggs owns Murray now and older machines did not make the transition to AriNet. This what it does tell me:
40 = 40" cutting deck width
602 = frame and feature description; probably a 5 speed with shifter between operator pedestal (dash, etc.) and seat deck (self-explanatory, I hope)
X - separator
5B = customer number (don't know who); 8 is Home Depot, 92 is WalMart. B is version year designation; first year is blank, A is second year and B means third year made for that customer.
date = 1431 the 1 is 1991, rest is not necessarily translatable, two factories producing riders.
Of other interest, possibly. Very old Murray machines, by lawn mower standards, have a four digit model number and current machines use a six digit number. A common way of breaking the system into pieces so that the date of manufacture can be decoded since only the last digit of the year is used. (MTD first went to letters of the alphabet in the model, then extra numbers and coded serial numbers.)
MTD examples 12A-559K401 & 13B5608J131:
1 = mower (2= chore performer)
2 = self-propelled, 3 = rider (1 = push)
A = 1999, B = 2000
559 & 5608 = 559 first decade of basic frame, 5608 second decade of frame (extra digit)
K & H = K is 21" rear discharge, H is 46" deck
401 & 131 = 401 is Yardman label, 131 is Tractor Supply
Peace,
Clarke
