Help I don't know what to do,

I am 20 years old and got an operation last 2007 for a cyst removal on my breast, I got health insurance that time but then my health insurance didn't paid my bills soon enough, so my bills went up too high for couple of thousands of dollars. They paid my bill in 2009 and the rest pretty much was sent to collection.
Am I really the one responsible to pay all of those?
    Please help..

If you can show that the charges were covered by your health insurance at the time they occurred, then the insurance carrier is responsible for them.
