Running is likely the better fat burner but it is also high-impact. I'm a cyclist because I find running too slow and I worry about knee issue later. The problem with cycling is that it does not work out your abs so you need some cross-training for that.

According to me if you are a little too over weight you should opt for buying a cycle. It will allow you to work and burn more calories than running. So I would suggest you to buy it

Actually I favour cycling. Just get active, take the stairs, go for walks, watch your diet.

Ultimately it is just a personal choice. The IMPORTANT choice is the one to do something. What it is you do is more of a matter of what your body and mind respond best to and your goals.

Your goal seems to be general fitness. Anything that gets your heart rate up and sustains it for a sufficient period is great. Bike, run, swim, do aerobics - it matters a lot more that you are consistent in doing something than what it is that you do.

In short... go with what you enjoy more.
