Vegetables plus 9 dollars equals to the Chicken.

(Chicken plus vegetable) then minus $16 equals bananas.

How much is chicken, vegetable, and bananas each?

Chicken=C
Banana=B

V+9=C
(C+V)-16=Banana

You told us to remember that the total is $20, but you yourself forgot! :p lol.

You also have C+V+B=20.

Substitute second equation with the first one;

(V+9+V)-16=B
2V + 9 - 16 = B
2V - 7 = B

Use that in C+V+B=20;

C+V+(2V-7)=20

and C=V + 9

(V+9)+V+(2V-7)=20

Now, can you continue?

LOL, hey Unknown, I really can't continue on your post, I'm sorry, I don't understand how you can simplify it if there's so much unknown (to me anyways) variables.

This is how I got it:

(V+9)+V+(2V-7)=20

V+V+(2V-7)=20-9
V+V+(2V-7)=11

V+V+2V=11+7
V+V+2V=18

V+V+V=18/2

V+V+V=6

Now what?

NO!! You did a mistake... that show me that you didn't have such a solid base in maths...

Ok, x+x= 2x, right?
x+2x=3x, still right?
2x+2x=4x, do you agree?

Then, V+V+2V = ?

Now that you've found the value of V, you can find the rest easily. In the first equation; V+9=C

Since you got V, you can have C.

Having V and C, you can find B through V+B+C=20, or (C+V)-16=B. You just need to substitute in your values for V and C. Got it now? Or, do you need more details?
