Septate hymen
I've recently found out that I have a septate hymen by doing research on the internet. Like many of the other people that have described their experiences on this site, I have also experienced the pain the occurs when trying to remove a tampon and having the septum stopping me from removing it. I am 16, and a virgin, but instead of waiting to have sex to see what will happen to this septum, I'd like to know if anyone could give me a bit more insight on the 'minor surgery' that everyone keeps on mentioning, because to be honest I'm terrified about it. If anyone has undergone this surgery can you please tell me if it hurts or not? Also how long it takes? Well really any facts about this surgery would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Before you get yourself crazy... plan a visit with an obgyn

Well, I'm having mine in the morning so I can let you know! I'm having it at the doctor's office with a local anesthetic so it's not a major procedure by any means. My doctor said they would just numb it up and then snip it real quick. Will probably be a little sore for a few days, but nothing drastic.
Hope that helps and I will try and remember and update after I have mine done tomorrow.

Again... unless she has had a obgyn do an exam... she does not know for sure. She has self-diagnosed herself... which we all know has a good chance of being wrong.
Thorton- Good luck with your procedure!

Well, I agree. She does need to see an OBGYN to make sure that she does indeed have a septate hymen but it doesn't hurt to just be curious about what the procedure would be like if the doctor diagnoses her with one. I've known something was wrong since I was 15 and have repeatedly asked my OBGYN about it and the pain I had with tampons, and she did an exam and always concluded that I was just "narrow". Finally, after some research on the internet myself, I suggested the possibility of a 'septate hymen' and she immediately found it after that. So, it can't help to be just a little curious about her possible diagnosis!
Anyway, that being said, I had the procedure this morning and it was unbelievably simple. I was in and out in less than 15 minutes. The doc just numbed up the area, sliced it at both ends real quick and used some silver nitrate to cauterize the area. No stitches or anything. It's not really sore at all and it was much much easier than I anticipated. Nothing to be worried about at all. Go see your OBGYN and see if you do have a septate hymen and if so, don't worry about the procedure!

Well, all things said by other posters counted for...
I am curious why you are using a tampon? Tampons are not recommended for virgins hon. NOTHING should be going inside your vagina at this point.

Never heard of this before. I used a tampon as a virgin and have never had any issues. ii am a healthy adult with a child... Maybe that is an urban myth or an old wife's tale.

I have never heard that either. I don't know a single person who didn't use tampons as a virgin... Most girls break their hymens long before they have sex (horseback riding, bicycles, etc) and sometimes it just breaks irregularly like mine and results in a septate hymen. Tampons are for use by everyone, not just those who've had sex. The hymen doesn't necessarily fully break when having sex either. I had such tremendously painful experiences during sex which is what led me to seriously think something was wrong and talk to the doctor.

Hi, I'm 14 years old and I had my minor surgery for my septate hymen 10 days ago. And first you need to plan an appointment with your geyno, and right after my appointment we schedualed for my surgery, I only had to wait a week and I just went to the hospital and they usually put you all the way under, they inject the medicine in your IV and then it takes about 2 minutes for it to start working. And I woke up a little sore but no pain. The surgery only takes about 35- 40 minutes max. But they will give you pain medicine after, but I only needed it about once. And recovery is just 4-5 days :) If you have any questions at all, ask me :)

I'm 16, and I have a septate hymen too.
I do recommend the surgery to remove it because mine did not break during intercourse.
I'm going to my GYN next week for the surgery.

I was once talking to a friend who had the same type of hymen problem, but she cut out her hymen all on her own without any doctor. I thought it was the craziest most painful thing that I have ever hear, but she said it didn't cause any pain at all. What can happen if you cut it out yourself, I'm curious.

I was recently talking to a friend about this surgeryand she said that she had cut out her septate hymen without going to the doctors. I thought that that was the most painful and scariest thing I have heard in a long time. But I'm curious, what is the difference between going to the doctors and cutting it yourself?

I'm 16 and I had the surgery to remove my septate hymen today, I went in at half past seven, had the anasthetic and when I woke up an hour later, I was in no pain and was discharged at three o clock. It didn't hurt at all and still doesn't hurt. I would really recommend it , it's such a relief to know I don't have to worry about it any more.

Septate hymen... a small band of tissue sperating vagina. The surgery hardly takes 5 minutes and is very simple.the doctor gives u local anesthesia and it doesnot hurt at all.if it pains u can take bruffen(pain killer) as advised by doctor.there will be very little bleeding.

Thornton 82 said it only takes 15 minutes and then chana14 says it took 35-40 minutes and you were in hospital for it? What the?!
I want to get mine snipped and I'm hoping that thornton82s explanation is much more accurate!

I am 19 and have had a septate hymen for 7 years now. It all started because a tampon went through a piece of skin and created another hole. I had to go to the doctors because it wouldn't come out with the hole it had created. Worst experience EVER! Tampons CAN break your virginity if you're not careful enough.
