Unless your friend is a licensed qualified electrician, do not take any advice from him/her.

Adding up the amp ratings of all the circuit breakers in any panel means absolutely nothing.

Can you explain what your trying to do?

The 200 amp rating of the system you have was determined, or should have been,by performing load calculations, and should have some reserve ampacity for future load.

Any idea of the new load? Has anyone done the calcs to see if your panel or service has the capacity to add load?

Go to friends house and count his breakers. If not using all his amps, tell him u will tap into his for your needs. HAHA

I don't know if I ever saw a House Panel, where the Breakers Didn't total more than the Service amps.

Brian, as TK said, DO NOT listen to anything your friend tells you with regard to electrical. He has NO clue!
