I would like to use the PC as the handset
I have lan line connection and a comp running XP. I would like to use the PC as the handset I have ear problems which make using a handset or headset painful so using the computer speakers and a microphone would be attractive. Which software should I use?
I don't have a net connection therefore VoIP is out of question

So you'd like to use your computer as a LANDLINE replacement ?
That's not actually possible in the classic sense of the word.
You could use VoIP as a solution despite what you may think

You clearly have a net connection otherwise you would NOT of been able to post this question at all.
For that to be possible you machine would need to be always on to accept any incoming calls.
Although using a product like Skype you can setup voice mail service for the times you are not online.

You say you have a "lan line connection" yet you do not have "a net connection." Are you actually running a local area network in your home without an internet connection? Not even a modem? Forgive me, but that does sound a bit strange.

However, there is a very easy solution here - get yourself a speaker phone! They're inexpensive, sound better than Skype, and meet your requirement of no handset.

Yes a simple speaker phone will solve your problem. No need for a computer.
